CBSO/Grazinyte-Tyla— Mirga returns to Birmingham with lockdown-ready Brahms
★★★★☆
With concerts and tours all fallen by the wayside, it's not been the centenary year of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's dreams. Still, at least the CBSO's charismatic music director, Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, had a baby during her extended break — nifty work — and Simon Rattle subbed for her in an acclaimed anniversary concert streamed from an empty warehouse.

Gramophone Awards 2020: Winners Announced
Recording of the Year
The coveted Recording of the Year prize, and the Orchestral award, went to Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica for their debut Deutsche Grammophon recording of Mieczysław Weinberg's Symphonies Nos 2 & 21. Weinberg (1919-96) is a Polish composer, once reportedly described by Shostakovich as "the best composer you've never heard", whose music is enjoying something of a renaissance, in large part thanks to this recording, released in Weinberg's centenary year.

CBSO’s Mahler Eighth Symphony takes Birmingham by storm
I think I'm right in saying that to date Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla has conducted three Mahler symphonies with the CBSO. Earlier in her tenure as Osborn Music Director she led performances of the First and Fourth symphonies. I missed those concerts but I was impressed with her handling of the 'Resurrection' Symphony in June last year (review). The Second Symphony is a major test of any conductor but the Eighth, with its vast forces and even more unconventional design, presents even greater challenges.
