Der mit 25.000 Euro dotierte Würth-Preis der „Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland" geht in diesem Jahr an die litauische Dirigentin Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla. Die Preisträgerin nehme mit ihrem sensiblen Dirigat das Orchester und das Publikum mit auf eine „empathische musikalische Entdeckungstour", teilte der Verein zur Begründung mit. Die 38-Jährige sei durch ihre Hingabe eine glaubhafte Musikvermittlerin und ein „Vorbild für alle, die klassische Musik im Leben erfahrbar machen". Im Alter von nur 29 Jahren wurde die Litauerin 2016 als erste Frau Chefdirigentin des City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra und folgte damit auf Dirigenten wie Sir Simon Rattle und Andris Nelsons.

I think I'm right in saying that to date Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla has conducted three Mahler symphonies with the CBSO. Earlier in her tenure as Osborn Music Director she led performances of the First and Fourth symphonies. I missed those concerts but I was impressed with her handling of the 'Resurrection' Symphony in June last year (review). The Second Symphony is a major test of any conductor but the Eighth, with its vast forces and even more unconventional design, presents even greater challenges.
